History
Between the sea and the origins of Azorean hospitality
The history of Hotel do Mar and the Ciprotur Hotel Group
More than a hotel, Hotel do Mar is a testament to simplicity and authenticity. Here, luxury is the sound of the sea, the scent of salt air and hospitality that comes from the heart.
A story born by the Atlantic
In the peaceful village of Povoação, where the ocean meets the mountains, stands the Hotel do Mar — created in 2001 as part of the family-owned Ciprotur Hotel Group.
The group was founded in 1993, when a couple with a dream built a small 50-room hotel in Ponta Delgada, beginning a story of dedication, authenticity and love for the Azores.
Today, their children continue that mission, keeping alive the art of warm hospitality and the family spirit that has always distinguished the Ciprotur brand.
An Azorean retreat with soul
The Hotel do Mar was designed to reflect the serene rhythm of the village of Povoação — the first settlement on the island of São Miguel and one of the most authentic places in the Azores.
Its seafront location offers an experience of tranquillity, ideal for those seeking nature, peace and views that change with the light of the day.
Here, the sound of the waves replaces the clock, and each sunrise brings with it the promise of a lighter day.
Part of a family that grows with the islands
The Hotel do Mar is one of the four properties of the Ciprotur Hotel Group, a group that has evolved with the islands and for the islands.
Hotel Ponta Delgada
the group’s first hotel, built in 1993, with 98 rooms, restaurant, spa and indoor pool.
Antillia Hotel
built in 2006 and expanded in 2018, a modern hotel in the centre of Ponta Delgada, with pools, spa and family apartments.
Hotel Colombo
opened in 2005 on the island of Santa Maria, where time moves slowly and the sunset takes centre stage.
Each property reflects a different way of experiencing the Azores, yet all share the same DNA: genuine hospitality, comfort and a connection to the sea.
The spirit remains
In the Azores, there are places that are not only visited… they are felt.
And the Hotel do Mar has been one of those places since 2001.
